Teh dan Madu Bakal Gantikan Antibiotik?

Fenomena resistensi kuman terhadap antibiotik yang kian mengkhawatirkan kembali disuarakan para pakar kesehatan. Resep pengobatan tradisional seperti teh dan madu dipersiapkan sebagai salah satu solusi alternatif dalam mengatasi kuman yang semakin kebal terhadap obat-obatan.

Penggunaan antibiotik yang tidak rasional dan berulang-ulang merupakan penyebab terbesar suatu jenis bakteri menjadi resisten terhadap obat. Pakar kedokteran menyebut fenomena yang mengkhawatirkan ini dengan istilah “arms race”.

Ketidakmampuan suatu obat antiobiotik mengatasi bakteri kini menjadi momok setelah ditemukannya antibiotik pada tahun 1940-an. Kehadiran antibiotik sempat menjadi solusi yang efektif dalam mengobati penyakit yang disebabkan oleh bakteri. Namun ketika bakteri sudah menjadi resisten terhadapnya, dibutuhkan alternatif lain yang dapat membuat pengobatan menjadi kembali efektif.

Prof. Les Baillie, dari Cardiff University Inggris menyatakan, bukan mustahil dunia akan kembali ke suatu masa dimana belum ditemukan antibiotik, sehingga pengobatan sejenis penyakit menjadi permasalahan besar.

Oleh karenanya, para ilmuwan  kini sedang mengupayakan membuat suatu sulosi alternatif  ketika bakteri sudah menjadi resisten terhadap antibiotik. Baillie  saat ini mengetuai tim riset untuk mencari tahu apakah obat kuno seperti teh dan madu dapat menjadi cara berikutnya sebagai obat yang paling efektif mengobati penyakit.

Teh diketahui mengandung suatu senyawa yang dinamakan polifenol yang memiliki kemampuan membunuh mikroorganisme.

Tim peneliti yang dipimpin Baillie telah menemukan, teh mampu untuk mengobati penyakit yang disebabkan oleh Clostridium difficile, bakteri yang bertanggung jawab untuk setidaknya 2.000 orang tewas dan lebih dari 24.000 kasus infeksi tahun lalu.

Rhidian Morgan-Jones, seorang ahli bedah dari Cardiff, mengatakan bahwa ada kekhawatiran nyata tentang masa depan dunia kedokteran saat antibiotik tidak lagi dapat digunakan.

Prof. David Livermore, dari Badan Perlindungan Kesehatan Inggris, bulan lalu memberi peringatan, operasi besar dan penanganan kanker akan menjadi lebih berbahaya lagi. Penggunaan antibiotik kemungkinan hanya akan bisa dilakukan untuk 10 tahun ke depan.

Perkembangan dunia kedokteran modern seperti perawatan intensif dan transplantasi organ akan berada di bawah ancaman tanpa antiobiotik. Oleh karenanya, segera dibutuhkan pengganti antibiotik.
